Nurse Gunnar Arnason

Nurse Gunnar Arnason is a medical officer assigned to Federation Outpost 112.

He is currently assigned to Starbase Aeon

Race: Human
Place of Birth: Iceland
Home Planet: Earth

Age: 26
Height: 1.93m (6'4")
Weight: 82kg (180 lbs)
Hair-color: Blonde
Eye color: Blue
Complexion: Very White
Physical Description: Almost stereotypically Nordic, if Gunnar was a bit less clean-cut he'd look right at home in one of his ancestors' Viking longboats. However, his manner is too easy-going for the impression to last. He still has the lean athletic build of his high school basketball days, and stays fit with swimming and handball.

Rank: Nurse/ Lieutenant
Major Area of Study: Medicine (Doctorate in Advanced Nursing Practice)
Minor Area of Study: Xenosociology

Gunnar grew up in a rural area of Iceland and first learned about medicine assisting his father, a large animal vet, when he made rounds to neighboring farms. However he took an interest in sociology and was torn between pursuing that or medicine. While studying a unit on community health care he followed a nurse practitioner and decided that represented the best of both worlds. In the modern era doctors rarely got to take the time to interact with patients and get to know them the way old country doctors used to - the people who made house calls were generally NPs, who can write prescriptions and handle most medical care short of surgery.

He might have settled down to a practice like his father's, except with human clients, but an encounter with a group of off-world tourists sparked something. Gunnar is a direct descendent of the Vikings who settled Iceland, and while he didn't inherit much in the way of warrior genes, Viking wanderlust bred true.

Starfleet was quite happy to recruit a male nurse - someone physically strong enough to handle certain types of patients and unlikely to be intimidated by them. It took a year longer (and the Rukakon and the Void added further delays), but he completed his graduate degrees in Advanced Nursing Practice while taking the regular Starfleet courses at the Academy.

He arrived at OP112 shortly after Dr. Shannon had been kidnapped by the Resistance and his training as an NP allowed him to support Doctor Divash, helping her cover medbay with the CMO gone. During the subsequent months, they worked together closely and developed a fairly close relationship - one humans might call 'friends-with-benefits' and the Orion doctor would simply call 'friends'. A true xenophile, Gunnar is almost as fascinated by Divash as an Orion as he is by her as a woman and made an effort to learn about her culture even before becoming involved with her. However, he is human. What he understands intellectually about her Orion point of view doesn't necessarily make his own feelings toward her less confusing.

Gunnar was wounded and captured during a Resistance raid on a peace conference and spent over three months as a POW on a base in the Klingon Empire. During his time there he became proficient at tlhIngan Hol (Klingon language) and used his skill as an observer and student of xenosociology to help him survive. He also received protection, and ultimately help in escaping, from Abram Daggett, ironically the same man who had shot and abducted him, and to a lesser extent from a Klingon warrior, Q'tIl, who was initially amused by a human who spoke Dosadi, but developed a grudging respect for his stoic refusal to be either goaded into a fight or show fear when threatened.

Notes of Interest

Hobbies: swimming, handball, rock-climbing, reading

Personal Traits: Easy-going, seems quiet at first, but he enjoys being around people; he just likes listening more than talking. Xenophilic - loves learning about other species/cultures. He is an avid reader in this area, almost as addicted to books on the subject as he is to the sort of coffee that ought be stirred with a trowel.

He is very good at being calm, and confident in a non-threatening way, which are valuable traits for a nurse. They also make him good with animals, although it helps that he is also very fond of them - one of the few things that can provoke a show of temper is cruelty to an animal. Otherwise he's pretty laid back. Even the annoying people who wonder if he's a nurse because he wasn't good enough to become a doctor will generally only get an eyeroll.

Notes of interest: Iceland has stubbornly stuck to historic Norse naming conventions wherein surnames truly are patronimics. Hence, because his father's first name is Arne, Gunnar's last name is Arnason (son of Arne). It's also traditonal to name children after grandparents and great-grandparents, so (as might be guessed from his mother's last name) he's named after his maternal grandfather.

His mother's parents own a horse farm (which is how his parents met), so Gunnar, while a bit out of practice now, is an experienced rider.
